Alabama Secession Flag Fragments and Letter. Historic update on the one and only Alabama secession flag. A recently discovered letter and flag fragments change the history books on what the Alabama secession flag looked like. It had a white silk border. North South Trader Magazine did a story on this grouping. Vol.32 no.6, 2007. History Detectives tv show had these items for an upcoming episode until I asked for their return. The letter reads: Columbia, May 11 186[0?] Friend Hall, Enclosed I send you a piece of the first secession flag that was ever raised in the state of Alabama. There is no humbug about it. It was given to me by a gentleman just from Montgomery who had been there a number of years and, of course, was a good secessionist till he got his traps away from there. The flag was raised with much point and by a lady, a niece of John Tyler, the damn traitor. After Alabama passed the ordinance of secession and joined the Confederacy the style of flags was changed. This was taken down, torn up and distributed. My friend was so fortunate as to get a pretty sized piece. The hand grenade is still on hand. I will send it one of these days. {truely} yours, Kauffman. A copy of the magazine and all coraspondance with the Alabama Dept. of Archives and History come with this grouping. Call or email me for more details. $2495.00
